As an PH Environmental Health Specialist 4 or 5 within the District Two PH Environmental Health Services at Dawson County. At District Two, Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways. District 2 Public Health serves 13 counties in northeast Georgia, including Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties. One of the fastest growing regions in the state, District 2 includes rural and urban communities with diverse public health challenges.

Job Responsibilities

EH Specialist 4:
Under limited supervision, performs inspections, interviews, and technical reviews for the Environmental Health program in a public health department. .
Investigates complaints and recommends enforcement action as necessary. May also serve in a lead role and/or supervise work of assigned staff. May serve as the sole environmental health specialist providing environmental health program services in a single or multi-county area.

EH Specialist 5:
Under minimal supervision, conducts inspections and audits of assigned facilities/sites for compliance with applicable health codes in a Public Heath District Reviews and/or prepared applications, permits, and technical reports. Investigates and responds to complaints of potential health hazards and requests for service. May also serve in a lead role and/or supervise and plan work of assigned staff. May serve as a technical expert or sole environmental health specialist providing environmental health program services in a single or multi-county area. Responsible for County EH operations and supervision of staff
Trainings or additions:

  • Attendance and completion of the GA EH training program

  • Completion of level I and II Certification in the On-Site Sewage Management System Program

  • Serves as the Rabies Control Officer for the County.

  • Completion of NIMS courses 100, 200, 700, and 800

  • Completion of NIMS 300/400 or achieved within one year of hire as EHS 4

  • Completion of Customer Service training

  • Provides Environmental Health education and technical assistance to the general public and regulated community

  • Implements local and district wide programs for compliance, monitoring, evaluation, enforcement, and corrective action in conjunction with Environmental Health laws, rules and regulations

  • Serves as the compliance officer and primary liaison between Public Health Agency, regulated facilities and other county and state agencies.

  • Interprets regulatory issues, technical issues, and analytical data to document compliance with State, Federal, and Local Environmental Health laws and regulations.

  • Serves as a lead worker and technical specialist for the Environmental Health Program within the county.

  • Responsible for County EH operations and supervision of staff:
    • Supervises a staff of two (2) or more
    • Serves as an EH Manager/Supervisor over a County

Minimum Qualifications

EH Specialist 4:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with 27 semester hrs. (40 quarter hrs.) laboratory science (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, math); AND 1-year experience as an EHS III (RCP122) or position equivalent

Additional qualifications:

  • Responsible for County EH operations and supervision of Staff
  • Attendance and completion of the GA EH training program
  • Completion of level I and II Certification in the On-Site Sewage Management System Program
  • Completion of NIMS courses 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Completion of NIMS 300/400 or achieved within one year of hire as EHS 4
  • If working in Food Service Program (conducting more than 10 inspections per year), completion of Certified Food Safety Management Course
  • Completion of Customer Service training

EH Specialist 5:

Master’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or related field from an accredited college or university; OR Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with 27 semester hrs. (40 quarter hrs.) laboratory science (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, math etc.) AND current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association or an equivalent recognized credentialing board; AND 1-year experience as an EHS IV (RCP123) or position equivalent

Additional qualifications:

  • Serves as an EH Manager/Supervisor over a County
  • Attendance and completion of the GA EH training program
  • Completion of level I and II Certification in the On-Site Sewage Management System Program
  • Completion of NIMS courses 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Completion of NIMS 300/400 or achieved within one year of hire as EHS 5
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Georgia PMP (Performance Management Program) or within one year
  • Completion of a Manager or Leadership Development Training or within one year
  • If working in Food Service Program (conducting more than 10 food service inspections per year), hold current standardization on the Georgia Food code or must be standardized within 2 years of hire date and complete Certified Food Safety Management Course
  • Current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association or an equivalent recognized credentialing board
  • Completion of Customer Service training
